| The Institute was founded in 1995 by the Sports
Medicine surgeons at the Hospital for Special Surgery to increase
the scope and effectiveness of soft tissue research. Grateful patients
wanted to contribute money that would be earmarked for research
into sports medicine problems.
The Institute works in partnership with the Sports Medicine Service
and the Laboratory for Soft Tissue Research at HSS. Our research
is currently focused in three areas: growing replacement articular
cartilage in the knee and in the laboratory for implantation to
repair localized injuries; the creation of a synthetic ligament
to replace one that has been torn without sacrificing healthy tissue;
and developing biological therapies to improve blood flow in tissues
that have a naturally poor blood supply.
Anyone is susceptible to injury if they participate in athletics.
Our research hope is to minimize the surgical trauma caused by these
injuries or perhaps eliminate the need for surgery in some cases.
The work of the Institute will lessen the debilitating impact of
injuries for all of us and hopefully, extend the period over which
each of us can pursue the activities and athletic pursuits that
give us the greatest pleasure.
